Zibido San Giacomo

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 6,552 · Postal code: 20080

Zibido San Giacomo did not grow from a single village: where the comune stands there were once several separate hamlets, and the centre still rests on two of them, Zibido, the older, of Lombard date, and San Giacomo. The village of Zibido appears in a text of 1176, but some of its hamlets are named in documents a century older. The Theresian land register of 1757 shows how split up it was: about fifteen self-governing comuni here, a few of them no more than a farmstead or two. The last break was brief: in 1965 Binasco took Badile, and Zibido regretted it at once, taking it back in 1969.

On the forecourt of the parish church of San Giacomo, rebuilt in the Renaissance by an unknown architect, stands a serizzo sarcophagus that legend says held the saint's remains, carried from Jerusalem to Compostela in 512 by Saint Eustorgius. The arms are bendy azure and argent, and their origin is unclear: they may derive, with some variation, from those of the Milanese Sala family, who founded a charitable Opera Pia here. The rest is farmland: at Moirago the Salterio, with the workers' village of Crespi d'Adda in mind, built around their estate a self-sufficient farming hamlet, with labourers' houses, a nursery and a school.
