Rozzano too bears a Roman's name: from Rutius, or Erucius, plus the suffix -anus meaning «of», that is, that man's land. The road from Mediolanum to Ticinum ran through it, and the town is still there, on the line between Milan and Pavia. Its hamlets are milestones: Quinto de' Stampi was the fifth mile, Pontesesto the sixth. The comune, by contrast, is recent and hard-won: Napoleon began putting it together in 1809, the Austrians undid it all in 1816 and then changed their minds, and only in 1870 did Vittorio Emanuele II settle the matter by annexing Pontesesto, which brought Quinto as its dowry.
Grown fast around the farmsteads of the southern Lambro, Rozzano today travels the world above all for the IRCCS Humanitas, the hospital and medical university that draws patients and researchers from every continent: a record in healthcare that has redrawn the identity of this town-quarter. Green survives along the Naviglio Pavese — which is in the town's arms too — and in the farming parks; the old paper mill and the Lombard courtyard farms recall its peasant origins. Milan is a quarter of an hour away: Rozzano is its southern entrance, working-class and changing.
