Risotto alla Milanese rice, saffron, beef marrow and butter, creamy and soft
Rice, saffron, beef marrow and butter: Milan's golden dish, tied by legend to a glassmaker of the Duomo in 1574.
Read more →Milan's province has been cut down twice — the Lodi area broke away in 1995, Brianza in 2009 — and since 2015 it has been run as a metropolitan city. What is left is 133 municipalities packed around the capital of Lombardy, one of the most densely built stretches of Italy, where towns run into each other with barely a gap. It even keeps an exclave, San Colombano al Lambro, stranded between the provinces of Lodi and Pavia.
Nearly everything a visitor comes for is inside the city itself: the Duomo, Leonardo's Last Supper at Santa Maria delle Grazie, the Sforza Castle, the Brera picture gallery and La Scala. Beyond the ring road lies the hinterland: Sesto San Giovanni and Cinisello Balsamo are full-sized towns, Legnano heads the Altomilanese district and Rho the Rhodense. Not postcard territory, but the province as it actually is.
