Bressana Bottarone

Province: Pavia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 3,535 · Postal code: 27042

Agostino Depretis was born here on 31 January 1813 and was eight times prime minister of the Kingdom of Italy between 1876 and 1887, but the municipality that saw him born no longer exists: Bressana and Bottarone were suppressed in 1928 and merged into a single body by royal decree. Of him, however, one thing survives that no decree has cancelled. In the hamlet of Argine there is a halt on the Pavia-Stradella line that Depretis himself wanted, and for that reason the railway around here is still called, unofficially, the Depretis line.

Three thousand five hundred and thirty-five inhabitants in the province of Pavia, in the plain of the Oltrepò on the right bank of the Po, where the Coppa stream comes out. In the coat of arms, granted in 1993, are the castle of Argine, the letter B for the initial of the name and three stars: one for Bressana, one for Bottarone and one for Argine, the three hamlets that make up the village. The church of San Giovanni Battista, built in 1844, became a parish only in 1953: before that it was called Bressana d'Argine.
