Feast of Saint John the Baptist
📅 Every year, on 24 June
On 24 June Montalto Pavese, a municipality of 924 inhabitants in the province of Pavia, celebrates its patron Saint John the Baptist.
Montalto Pavese has 924 inhabitants on the first hills above Casteggio, and they call it the queen of the Oltrepò: for its castle with an Italian garden, which stands so high that it can be seen from half of Lombardy, and for its wine. The name appears as Monte Alto in 1034; in 1164 the village passed to Pavia, which gave it in fief to the Belcredi, and the Belcredi obtained something that was not seen in the other fiefs: they appointed the podestà themselves, instead of receiving him from the city.
In 1477 the Sforza made Montalto a county and gave it to the Strozzi, but the Belcredi remained the richest family and kept the castle; in 1617 the fief was sold to the Taverna, and in 1658 the Belcredi bought it back, holding it until the end of feudalism. On the ridge above the village is the Belvedere, where the two narrow valleys that meet there make a constant wind: model aircraft, hang-gliders and paragliders come to fly.
