Lirio

Province: Pavia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 136 · Postal code: 27040

For nine hundred years this village did what Montalto did. In the eleventh century both belonged to the Pavia monastery of Santa Maria delle Cacce; in 1164 they came together under Pavia; then Lirio entered the magistracy and the fief of Montalto and stayed there, passing from the Belcredi to the Strozzi, the Taverna and the Belcredi again, until the end of feudalism. In September 2025 a referendum closed the circle: since the thirty-first of January 2026 Lirio is no longer a comune, having been annexed to that of Montalto Pavese.

Little was its own, and of that little not much is known: the name is of unexplained origin, probably pre-Latin, and the parish is no help either, for being dedicated to Saint Paul the village is now and then confused with another San Paolo, a vanished comune that lay in the fief of Broni, down towards the Po. Its coat of arms, party red and green, had been granted in 2015: ten years before it ceased to exist. It lies in the hill country of the Oltrepò, in the valley of the Scuropasso.
