Pieve Porto Morone

Province: Pavia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,788 · Postal code: 27017

The village's name is made of three things, and all three are in the coat of arms: the church, which is the pieve; a bridge of boats on the Po, which is the porto; and a mulberry tree, which hereabouts is called morone. Pieve Porto Morone, in short, explains itself. It appears as Plebs Portus Moroni in the diploma of 1164 by which the emperor Frederick I granted Pavia jurisdiction over the Oltrepò, the Lomellina and some outlying places that probably did not belong to it at all.

In 1014 the emperor Henry II had granted it to the monastery of San Felice, and in 1160 the place was defended by a tower planted on the Po. From 1228 it was the lordship of the counts of Rovescala, descendants of the counts of Pavia; in the fifteenth century it entered the Vicariate of Belgioioso, which however had its capital at Corteolona, because Belgioioso, though giving it its name, was not part of it. In 1866 the suppressed municipality of Mezzano Parpanese was joined to it. Two thousand seven hundred and eighty-eight inhabitants in the province of Pavia, a little way from the left bank of the Po.
