In a tax roll of the Pavia territory of 1250 the place appears as Cirixola cum Verreto: Ceresola with Verretto. Ceresola was an important Carolingian court, with its own church of Sant'Ambrogio; Verretto was what stood beside it. After that, in the documents, only Verretto is named: the appendage stayed and the court did not.
In the fourteenth century the village belonged to Fiorello Beccaria, and his descendants had themselves called Beccaria di Verretto: here the name went from the village to the family, and not the other way round. Then Verretto followed the fief of Montebello wherever it went, from the Orozco to the Machado to the Spinola. It lies in the plain, on the left of the Coppa.
