Ardenno

Province: Sondrio · Region: Lombardy · Population: 3,270 · Postal code: 23011

Pilasco is a few houses between the slopes of the Colmen di Dazio and the right bank of the Masino torrent, and until 1963 it belonged to the municipality of Dazio. Then it passed to Ardenno, and not by decree: its inhabitants asked for it, because this way was more convenient. It is the simplest way for a boundary to move, and it rarely happens. Ardenno lies at the foot of the Rhaetian Alps, at the mouth of the Val Masino, just east of the point where the floor of the Valtellina makes a double S-bend to get round that very headland.

The other hamlets all lie higher up: Gaggio, which they call the panoramic balcony above Ardenno, and Pioda, at seven hundred and two metres, where some fifteen people live permanently and there is an eighteenth-century church of San Gottardo, raised to sanctuary in 1946. The village band already existed in 1878. The fair is held on the third Sunday of November and was once a fair for buying and selling animals. Salvatore Quasimodo stopped here for a while and named Ardenno in one of his poems. Three thousand two hundred and seventy inhabitants in the province of Sondrio.
