Buglio in Monte is known as the Sun Terrace, and the name is a description: the village lies on the Rhaetian side of the Valtellina, west of Sondrio, and its terraces face due south, catching the light for most of the day. They are terraces wrested from the slope, and vines grow on them: at Villapinta the terrace road runs through the middle of them, climbing from the 263 metres of the lower village to the 325 of the upper one.
The comune, though, lives on two levels. Above are the terraces and the scattered hamlets — Villapinta, Bugo, Ronco, Ere; below, on the valley floor, the land is flat and wide as far as Ardenno, and it is all fields and cattle sheds, with the farms and the livestock. Between them runs the stream of the Valle Primaverta, which ends in the Adda Vecchia and from there in the Adda. The municipal coat of arms came late, in 1995.
