The name most probably comes from citrus, the cedar, because of the trees that covered these slopes, and the coat of arms says the same thing: two mountains, which are the position of the village; a silver band, which is the torrent; and above, a tree, which should indeed be a cedar, that is, canting arms. Cedrasco lies south-west of Sondrio, on the Orobie side of the Valtellina, and its territory climbs from the valley floor up to the ridge, where it borders Foppolo, which already belongs to the Bergamo province. The origin of the village is placed in the fourteenth century: in 1335 the Valtellina passed under the Visconti of Milan, and from then the village grew thanks to something Milan cared about a great deal, the iron mines. Later the valley spent nearly three centuries under the Grisons.
The parish church is dedicated to Saint Augustine and goes back to the fifteenth century, though what one sees is the result of the rebuilding between the seventeenth and the eighteenth: it has an elegant baroque front, and inside it keeps some youthful paintings by Pietro Ligari, the painter of the Valtellina. Before having a parish of its own, Cedrasco depended on the pieve of Berbenno, from which it split in 1454: that is the date on which the community begins to exist on the ecclesiastical map too, and not only as a group of houses among the woods. With those woods, which the name recalls, the territory is still covered: they are the reason the village was born where it was born.
