Saint Eusebius of Vercelli and the Black Bell Tower
📅 Every year, on 2 August
Prata Camportaccio celebrates Saint Eusebius of Vercelli on 2 August, in the parish church dedicated to him.
San Cassiano has had three churches and still has all three, though two no longer work as such. Of the first only the bell tower remains: the building was swept away in 1887 by the flood of the Vallaccia torrent. The second was built in 1893 in place of the one destroyed, and today it is the hamlet's cinema-oratory, with the frescoes of Enrico Roveda da Plesio still on the upper floor. The third, consecrated in 1971, is the one in use; its bell tower was added twenty-six years later.
At Prata too there is a bell tower without a church, and they call it the black bell tower for its dark colour. It is what remains of San Cristoforo e Pancrazio, where evangelical worship was practised: in 1628 the bishop of Como, Lazzaro Carafino, ordered its demolition because of the building's very poor condition, and the Romanesque tower was left standing. In 1863 Camportaccio was added to the name Prata to avoid confusion with other places. Two thousand nine hundred and twenty-one inhabitants in the province of Sondrio, just south of Chiavenna.
