San Giacomo Filippo

Province: Sondrio · Region: Lombardy · Population: 395 · Postal code: 23020

The arms are the valley's old flag, and the flag is its constitution: three horizontal bands, one for each of the three terzieri into which the Val San Giacomo was divided, and each band split into four stripes, black, green, red and yellow, one for every quarter. Until the Restoration the valley was a single comune; then the Austrian government broke it into three to weaken it, because it looked too much towards Switzerland.

At Gallivaggio stands the sanctuary of the Madonna della Misericordia, consecrated in 1615 for an apparition that tradition places in 1492, to two girls gathering chestnuts. On the twenty-ninth of May 2018 five thousand cubic metres of the mountain came down: the church stayed standing but unusable, and the paintings had been carried out a few days before.
