Spriana lies in the Valmalenco and borders Sondrio: the provincial capital is a few kilometres away, and yet the village keeps losing inhabitants. There are two reasons, and the second is less usual than the first. There is the depopulation that affects all the Alpine valleys; and there is a landslide hanging over the built-up area, kept under constant watch by the civil protection service. Living beneath something that somebody measures every day is no small matter.
The coat of arms is recent, from November 2019, and it brings together the two things that count here. A cow, for the breeding of the Bruna alpina, the cattle of these mountains; and a pale, which in the language of heraldry is a vertical band, standing for the Mallero torrent, the one that runs the whole length of the Valmalenco and passes below the village.
