Montagna in Valtellina

Province: Sondrio · Region: Lombardy · Population: 3,031 · Postal code: 23020

In 1909, at Santa Maria Perlungo, a stone was found carved with characters of the north-Etruscan alphabet: it is dated to the beginning of the Romanisation, when the conquest had only just begun and Rhaetian traditions still held out, including the way of writing. The name of the village appears instead in 971 in a deed of sale, as vico de Muntania. Above the houses, in the basin of the Davaglione torrent, erosion of the morainic deposits has shaped earth pyramids: the most famous is called Capel del Diaul, the devil's hat, and has given rise to stories and legends.

The slope is all terraced, broken in with great labour over the centuries, and the vines of Rosso di Valtellina and Grumello are still grown on it. In the Cà Castaldo quarter, on the seventeenth of May 2025, a stumbling stone was laid, the second in the Valtellina: it recalls Alessandro Lavelli, born in 1924, one of the Italian Military Internees, deported after the eighth of September 1943 to the camp of Oschatz, in Saxony, and dead in 1945 in the civil hospital of Wurzen of tuberculosis contracted in captivity. Three thousand and thirty-one inhabitants in the province of Sondrio.
