Tresivio

Province: Sondrio · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,002 · Postal code: 23020

The name comes from tres viae, the three roads that met in the old centre of the village; from that crossroads grew the Tresivio of today, which is nonetheless made of scattered contrade, each with its own church: San Rocco at Piedo, which in the local dialect they call Cè, and then Sant'Abbondio, Sant'Antonio, San Tomaso, Santo Stefano, besides the parish church of Santi Pietro e Paolo and the church of the Calvario, which stands on a crag.

What Tresivio is known for, though, is the Santa Casa Lauretana: a translation of the Holy House of Loreto, begun in Baroque style in 1646 and dedicated to the Nativity of Mary, celebrated on 8 September. It is the largest church in the whole of the Valtellina. The municipal coat of arms, by comparison, is brand new: it was granted in 2013.
