Cocquio-Trevisago

Province: Varese · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,756 · Postal code: 21034

The second part of the name says what the place was for: Trevisago is thought to come from tres vias agere, the point where three roads meet — the one to Milan, the one to Lake Maggiore and the one to Switzerland. Cocquio, on the other hand, comes from a word meaning a small hill. The two villages became a single comune only in 1927. At Trevisago the ruin of an eleventh-century tower remains, once more than fifteen metres high: it served to watch who passed and, with a brazier lit at the top, to warn the other garrisons of the area of danger.

The village museum is housed inside a watermill, the one that belonged to the family of Innocente Salvini, the painter born here in 1889, and it is devoted entirely to him. In the municipal cemetery rests Esteban Canal, who was a chess Grandmaster of worldwide renown. Among the villas scattered over the territory, the Mörlin Visconti keeps a room frescoed with hunting scenes.
