Feast of Maria SS. Annunziata
📅 Every year, on 25 March
On 25 March Azzio celebrates Maria SS. Annunziata, patroness of the town, to whom the church is dedicated; the town also has the Campanile di Azzio and the Mulino Mascioni.
The municipal arms carry a rainbow crossed by a golden treble clef, and it is not an ornament: Azzio is a village of organs, because the Mascioni organ-building firm has its seat here, and the parish church's own organ is a Mascioni of 1891. Below the rainbow stand nine trees, above it three stars. The village lies on the northern slope of the Campo dei Fiori, and on its edge stands the church of Sant'Antonio e Sant'Eusebio, built in 1608 by enlarging an older church.
Its administrative history is a coming and going dated to the year: at the beginning of the nineteenth century Azzio had little more than three hundred inhabitants; in 1809 it was annexed to Gemonio, in 1812 to Cuvio, in 1927 to Orino — and each time it became a comune of its own again. Beside the church stood the convent of Santa Maria degli Angeli, of the reformed Friars Minor: parts of the ambulatory of its two cloisters can still be made out, along with the kitchen, the refectory and some cells, now privately owned. Inside the church remain the frescoes of Gian Battista Ronchelli, a wooden bust of Sant'Eusebio and two seventeenth-century statues in gilded wood.
