Induno Olona

Province: Varese · Region: Lombardy · Population: 10,336 · Postal code: 21056

Induno Olona, simply Induno until 1863, stands where Valganna meets Valceresio; the river Olona crosses the hamlet that shares its name. Two readings are offered for Induno: the Celtic dunum, a fortified place on high ground, or the Latin in dunis, «among the dunes». When Frederick Barbarossa came into Italy, the archbishop of Milan Oberto da Pirovano turned Frascarolo castle into a stronghold against the men of Como, who backed the emperor and had occupied Induno.

In the nineteenth century the Olona turned a farming village into one of workshops, six in all. In 1927 the comune was abolished and absorbed into Varese; a referendum gave its independence back on 25 October 1950, though Bregazzana stayed with the city. At Olona the Baroque church of the Holy Magi keeps relics of the Magi from the basilica of Sant'Eustorgio in Milan. The arms are split into two mirrored halves; in base one carries a small shield with a cross, the other the daisy the cross replaced.
