Belvedere Ostrense

Province: Ancona · Region: Marche · Population: 2,288 · Postal code: 60030

The castrum Belvideris was held by an imperial count on behalf of the March of Ancona, then passed to Jesi, which in the thirteenth century controlled the hills between the Esino and the Misa. Outside the walls, towards San Marcello, the sanctuary of the Madonna del Sole keeps the fresco that gives it its name: a Madonna holding the sun in her hands, painted in 1471 by Bartolo di Andrea of Jesi.

The convent of the Poor Clares took two wills and half a century: the first bequest was not enough, the second was, and the monastery was inaugurated in 1680. In the town hall, which the Balleani counts built and later sold to the comune, hangs the only surviving example of the Pallio di San Floriano, the cloth of the feast of the Respublica Æsina. The village also has an international museum of the postal image.
