Feast of Pope Saint Marcellus I
📅 Every year, on 16 January
On 16 January San Marcello celebrates its patron Pope Saint Marcellus I, whose name became part of the town's own name; the Teatro Primo Ferrari stands here.
San Marcello has a date of birth and a number: in 1234 a hundred and twenty-nine families from Jesi went up onto the Monte di San Marcello and founded a village there, under the protection of their comune. Nothing Roman has ever turned up in the territory, which suits a place that began the day somebody decided it should. The walls, with their round and square towers, are still there.
Inside those walls, in a village of two thousand people, there are three museums: of the telephone, of oil, and the Tapia Radic. The hills around make Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi and Lacrima too, though the Lacrima takes its name from the village next door, Morro d'Alba.
