Morro d'Alba

Province: Ancona · Region: Marche · Population: 1,977 · Postal code: 60030

In 1213 Senigallia was forced to hand Morro over to Jesi, and from then on the village was Jesi's: on the tower at the entrance the rampant lion of Jesi is still carved. «D'Alba» was added in 1862, to tell it from the other Morros in the Kingdom. And in 2016, when they were asked by referendum whether they wanted to merge with Senigallia, the village said no, and firmly.

Inside the walls, which are pentagonal, runs «La Scarpa»: a rampart walk some three hundred metres long, nearly all of it vaulted over, with wide windows for looking out; today it holds a museum of farm tools. In a tomb at the hamlet of Sant'Amico a golden medallion of Theodoric, king of the Goths, was found, and it is now in Rome.
