Feast of Saint Catherine of Alexandria
📅 Every year, on 25 November
On 25 November Camerata Picena celebrates its patron Saint Catherine of Alexandria; the town preserves the Castello del Cassero.
The name of Camerata appears for the first time in the first decades of the year one thousand. In 1309 the village found itself the battlefield of a war between comuni: on one side a coalition led by Jesi, on the other one led by Ancona. The men of Jesi won, and razed the castle to the ground. It was rebuilt between 1390 and 1391, and those who set it up again were twenty-five families arrived from Genga, authorised by the comune of Ancona: a village refounded by twenty-five households brought in from outside. Of the castle the shape remains: the old centre is still enclosed in the castle walls, with its characteristic circular plan around piazza Vittorio Veneto, where stand the town hall, housed in the historic palazzo Scalamonti, and the parish church. In the former seat of the town aqueduct open the castle caves, which by a stair lead straight outside the walls.
Two kilometres from the main village, in the hamlet of Cassero, there is another castle, founded in 1375 by the Anconitan admiral Niccolò Torriglioni: pope Urban VI had given him this place in fief as a reward for having brought the pope back from Avignon to Rome with his own galley. The church of the Nativity, rebuilt together with the castle from 1389, took its present form in 1854; inside are a wooden crucifix inspired by Masaccio's Trinity, with the Eternal Father above and the dove of the Holy Spirit, and an organ built in 1857 by Odoardo Cioccolani of Cingoli. As for the name, «Picena» was added by royal decree in 1863, to distinguish the village from the other Camerate of Italy. In 1928 the comune was aggregated to Chiaravalle, and it took back its autonomy in 1947.
