The opening of the Adriatic railway in 1861 completely shifted Falconara Marittima's center of gravity. Originally confined to a hilltop fortress overlooking the Gulf of Ancona, the settlement rapidly expanded down to the sandy shoreline. This infrastructure project turned the town into a coastal resort, forming a continuous urban sprawl with Ancona just nine kilometers away.
Home to 26,710 residents, the modern municipality extends north to the mouth of the Esino river. While summer crowds gravitate toward the beaches, visitors should also seek out Castelferretti and Rocca Priora. These two older fortifications offer a quiet historical alternative to the coastal strip and highlight the region's past maritime defenses.
