Feast of Saint Clement
📅 Every year, on 23 November
On 23 November Genga celebrates its patron Saint Clement; the municipal territory is home to the famous Grotte di Frasassi.
Under this comune runs one of the great karst systems of Italy, the caves of Frasassi. The first chamber, the Abisso Ancona, is two hundred metres high and so vast — more than two million cubic metres — that Milan cathedral would stand inside it. In the same valley, set into the mouth of another cave, are Valadier's little temple and the hermitage of Santa Maria Infra Saxa.
From here came the della Genga family, and one of them became pope as Leo XII. Further down the valley stands the Romanesque abbey of San Vittore alle Chiuse. And in 1976 an ichthyosaur was found in these rocks, a sea reptile that has taken the village's name: the Gengasaurus.
