Mergo

Province: Ancona · Region: Marche · Population: 1,083 · Postal code: 60030

From 1360 and for four centuries, at the feast of San Quirico the men of Mergo had to carry the palio to Serra San Quirico, as a sign of submission. A legend of the sixteenth century tells that the people of Mergo killed their own parish priest: it was said to be over a silver chalice that had vanished from the church of San Lorenzo, but the truth was never known, and as a punishment the parish was taken away and given to Serra.

Independence came only in 1827, when Pope Leo XII detached the castle from Serra and made it a comune; it was lost again in 1928, joined to Rosora, and regained on the first of February 1946. The name is said to come from a root meaning marsh, and from the smergo, the duck that lived there: but on the coat of arms, in place of the smergo, there is a blackbird.
