Rosora

Province: Ancona · Region: Marche · Population: 1,988 · Postal code: 60030

The old village stands on a steep hill of Pliocene sand, and underneath it is riddled: a dense network of tunnels and galleries dug in the tufa, still largely unexplored. Above there remain the fifteenth-century tower, a gate with its hinges, and a stretch of wall. Of the name there are four explanations, but the one that holds is castrum rosarii, the castle of the rosary.

The arms, a crowned lion, were given to Rosora by Jesi to reward its loyalty. Between 1928 and 1946 Rosora was not even itself: it was joined to Mergo in a comune called Rosora Mergo. Today it is one of the castles of the Verdicchio, and in autumn it holds the feast of the sapa, with the sixteenth-century wedding of Clementia played out again.
