Feast of Saint Placidus
📅 Every year, on 5 October
On 5 October Montecarotto celebrates its patron Saint Placidus, in a feast dating back to 1686; since 1982 it has been preceded by a market fair with roasted chestnuts and mulled wine.
The name says Mons Arcis Ruptae, the hill of the broken fortress: the village is named after a stronghold that was already a ruin when it came into being. That fortress stood on the line dividing the diocese of Senigallia from that of Jesi, and it was that very boundary that fed, for years, the ambitions over the country round about. In 1248 cardinal Raniero confirmed the castle to Jesi, following a donation by king Enzo, Frederick II's son.
Montecarotto was one of the four castles of the same pieve, together with Poggio San Marcello, Castelplanio and Rosora, its neighbour. The walls were rebuilt in 1509. Outside Italy, though, the village is known for another reason: every year it hosts a gathering of electronic music that has made its name beyond the borders.
