The patron of Montecarotto is Saint Placidus the Martyr, celebrated on 5 October; the feast dates back to 1686, when the martyr's relics were transferred from the Roman catacomb of Calepodius.
Since 1982 the feast has been preceded by a market fair along the town's main streets, where visitors are offered roasted chestnuts and mulled wine.
