On the arms there is a motto: NEC VI NEC VENTIS, neither by force nor by the winds. It is written on a band, with a comet above it and below a castle in ruins standing on its rock; on top of the helm, a griffin. Until 1879 the village was called Appignano di Offida.
The whole territory is shaped by the calanchi, the clay badlands: with the rain the hills slide downhill as mud, and the water gathers in the Chifenti torrent, which cuts the comune into six pieces. Among the old trades, the lace of Appignano is known well beyond the Marche.
