Castorano

Province: Ascoli Piceno · Region: Marche · Population: 2,322 · Postal code: 63081

The old name was Castrum Castruani. Ascoli bought this castle out of pure strategy: from here it could keep an eye on Offida, which sided with Fermo, and control the Tronto valley. In the Ascolan state it stayed a second-rank castle, and of the enclosure there remain stretches of wall, two fifteenth-century gates and a pentagonal tower with Ghibelline merlons.

The parish church of Santa Maria della Visitazione was born Benedictine in the eleventh century and was rebuilt later; the patron is celebrated on 31 May. In the Pescolla district stands San Giovanni Battista, and towards the Tronto lies the hamlet of San Silvestro. But the craft that made the village known is bobbin lace: the lacemakers work in the open and teach the first stitches to whoever stops.
