The city of Ascoli Piceno, the administrative capital, sits in the southern corner of Marche, where the region meets Umbria and Abruzzo, and the land runs east from there to the Adriatic.

The other half of the province is the seaside: San Benedetto del Tronto, almost as populous as the capital, with Grottammare and Cupra Marittima along the same shore. Inland the towns shrink fast — Offida has under 6,000 residents and the smallest municipality barely passes 200 — and that is where the province feels least rehearsed.
