The town exists because a body washed ashore. Saint Benedict was a Roman soldier stationed at ancient Cupra: he refused to recant and was beheaded on 13 October 304; his corpse, thrown into the sea, was carried by the currents onto this beach, where a farmer took it up and buried it on the hill. Around that grave grew the parish church, then the castrum, then the upper town that still looks down on everything from its old walled core, with the tower of the Gualtieri. The «del Tronto», on the other hand, is a council resolution of 1862: it was needed to tell the town apart from the other places of the same name in the newborn Kingdom.
The palms of San Benedetto run into the thousands, and they give their name to the whole Riviera: the art nouveau seafront, among the most elegant in Italy, alternates themed gardens, historic bathing huts and a path that invites you to cycle as far as Grottammare. The first bathing establishment opened in 1865 and is among the oldest in Italy. Behind the holiday there is a genuine salt-water soul: the fishing port, one of the largest on the Adriatic, with its fish auctions and its museum of seafaring life. It is the most populous comune in its province and the most densely inhabited in the Marche, as well as the southernmost on the regional coast. The brodetto alla sambenedettese — with peppers and vinegar, as parish-pump quarrels demand — is the flag on the table.
