Feast of Saint Lawrence
📅 Every year, on 10 August
On 10 August Massa Fermana, a municipality of 1,002 inhabitants in the province of Fermo, celebrates its patron Saint Lawrence (san Lorenzo).
Massa Fermana holds a record that has nothing to do with its size: in 1946, the year Italian women voted for the first time, it elected Ada Natali as mayor, the first woman to lead a municipality in Italy. The village, a little over a thousand people on a hill in the Fermo country, still has its medieval castle, partly lived in, and the gate of Sant'Antonio, which has been the way into the town since the fourteenth century.
The other record belongs to a painter: in the church of Santi Lorenzo e Silvestro there remained for centuries the polyptych that Carlo Crivelli signed and dated 1468, his first known work in the Marche, and since 2018 it has hung in the picture gallery of the town hall. The local trade is humbler and just as stubborn: straw, rush and wood shaving are worked here into bags and hats, and a small museum collects the bicycles on which the old street trades went from door to door.
