Feast of Saint George
📅 Every year, on 23 April
On 23 April Montappone, a municipality of 1,749 inhabitants in the province of Fermo, celebrates its patron Saint George; the town has the Museo del cappello (Hat Museum).
The village calls itself the international centre of the hat, and the claim holds up: a few streets hold a row of factories, and together with three neighbouring comuni it makes up the hat district of the province of Fermo. The old hat of this place was plaited by hand from the straw of jervicella, an ancient Marche wheat with a long, flexible stem; now they work felt, wool and textile paper as well.
Outside the village bubbles Lu Vullicaru, a little mud volcano. In the oratory of the Sacrament, behind a fourteenth-century doorway, there are frescoes by Vincenzo Pagani. And the local sauce is called «de lo vatte», of the threshing, and goes on the big rigatoni that here they call moccolotti; from Montappone came Cesare Tirabasso, who cooked for prince Umberto and wrote two books of cookery.
