In 1066 the men of Montefortino and those of Visso fought at Capotenna, where the Tenna rises, over the high pastures: Montefortino won, and in thanks its people carved a statue out of fig wood and placed it in the hermitage of Sant'Antonio, up there. The quarrels with the neighbours ended only in 1265, and the church of the Madonna della Pace recalls it.

The village became a free commune in 1084, with statutes of its own. Below, the Tenna cuts the Infernaccio gorges, and above their walls stands the hermitage of San Leonardo al Volubrio; in the next valley the sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Ambro recalls the apparition to a shepherd girl mute from birth, who spoke. Some place names — Colmartese, Campo d'Arte — come from the Roman cult of Mars.
