The name, they say, comes from the shape of the place: the hills that ring the village look like the ridges on the palm of a hand. Of its history, though, little is known, and for a precise reason: in 1799 bands of brigands came down from the mountains, passing themselves off as defenders of the papal government, and sacked and burned much of the village — and in the fire went the municipal archive, with the memory of the place inside it.
In 1700, for the jubilee, the confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament set out from here in procession all the way to Rome, slept at the hospice of the Santissima Trinità near ponte Sisto, and then walked home across the Sibillini mountains. The parish church, dedicated to Saint Michael, is built inside one of the village towers, and keeps the remains of frescoes.
