Feast of Saint John the Baptist
📅 Every year, on 24 June
On 24 June Visso, a municipality of 1,180 inhabitants in the province of Macerata, celebrates its patron Saint John the Baptist with its characteristic fair.
After the earthquake of 1328 Visso came down from the hill to the valley floor, around the pieve of Santa Maria, and from then on it suffered no comparable damage: until 2016. The municipality was divided into guaite — the Pieve, Ussita, the Montana, the Villa and the Pagese — and each elected its own prior, who sat in the palace that still bears the name.
The mountains gave little, and the people of Visso trespassed: the last great quarrel with Norcia over the pastures above Gualdo was settled in 1522 by the battle of Pian Perduto, on the plateau of Castelluccio. It is told by a mock-heroic poem of the seventeenth century, anything but impartial, attributed to a shepherd poet. In 1822 Visso was given the title of city, with the motto Antiquum et fidele Vissum.
