Servigliano

Province: Fermo · Region: Marche · Population: 2,347 · Postal code: 63839

Servigliano is the only village in the Tenna valley that does not sit on a hill. In 1771 the old settlement slid downhill and Clement XIV had it rebuilt on the flat, on a grid, inside a square wall with three gates; for a century it was called Castel Clementino, and it took back its old name in 1863. On the ridge of the old village stands the hamlet of Curetta.

Outside the walls, in 1915, a prison camp went up that had three lives: Austro-Hungarians, then Greeks and Anglo-Americans, and finally Italian and foreign Jews, thirty-one of whom were deported on 5 May 1944, and only three came back. When the war ended it took in refugees from Istria and Dalmatia. Today the site is the Parco della Pace.
