Monteleone di Fermo

Province: Fermo · Region: Marche · Population: 436 · Postal code: 63841

Just outside the village the ground does something one does not expect in the Marche: it erupts mud. These are active mud volcanoes, and the mud comes out sometimes from plain cracks in the soil, sometimes building proper cones, which however do not last: the stronger explosions blow them apart themselves. A landscape in miniature that remakes and destroys itself continuously, a few hundred metres from the houses.

Of the castle that stood up here in the thirteenth century a hexagonal tower remains, and beside it stands a town hall out of all proportion to the village. In the church of the Misericordia, instead, there is a Last Judgement painted in 1548 by Orfeo Presutti, above the fresco of the high altar. In dialect the village is called Monteleó.
