Feast of Saints Peter and Paul
📅 Every year, on 29 June
On 29 June Smerillo, a municipality of 389 inhabitants in the province of Fermo, celebrates its patrons Saints Peter and Paul.
They call it the roof of the Marche: from this spur of rock, halfway between the Sibillini mountains and the Adriatic, you can see the Gran Sasso, the Conero and the sea. The name probably comes from the merlin, the little falcon the feudal lord hunted with, and the falcon is in the coat of arms — arms the village never had officially granted: they exist only in the municipal statute.
In the sandstone opens the Fessa, a cleft full of Pliocene fossils. And then, for a village of a few hundred people, there is a surprising amount of culture: a museum of natural sciences, a gallery of contemporary art, a museum of children's art devoted to peace, a mountain festival in July and a permanent school of orienteering. They also call it the citadel of poetry.
