In the church of a village of eight hundred people there are three polyptychs by the Crivelli. Two were painted by Vittore; the third, the Monte San Martino polyptych, is the only one known to have been made by Carlo and Vittore together, the two brothers. In the same church of San Martino Vescovo there are also a polyptych by Girolamo di Giovanni da Camerino, a Crucifixion on copper attributed to Guido Reni and a fresco by Vincenzo Pagani. The village was a free commune from 1240, and before that it was called Ars Rubetana: the present name came with the Franks, who brought the cult of Saint Martin of Tours.

Then there is a story that begins far away. In 1989 an Englishman, Keith Killby, who during the war had been a prisoner in the camp at Servigliano nearby, founded with other veterans the Monte San Martino Trust: it awards bursaries to study English to young Italians between eighteen and twenty-five, and it does so in gratitude to the country people of these hills, who after the armistice of 1943 hid and saved thousands of escaping Allied prisoners. In the village, meanwhile, the old prison is still there, and it was called the Ospicium Inimicorum, the hospice of enemies.
