Feast of Saint Catherine of Siena
📅 Every year, on 30 April
On 30 April Poggio San Vicino, a municipality of 297 inhabitants in the province of Macerata, celebrates its patroness Saint Catherine of Siena.
Until 1927 this village was called Ficano, and before that, perhaps, Podium Tufficanum: a Roman settlement on the ridge below Monte San Vicino, which in the Middle Ages served as a lookout against raids heading for Apiro. History had its own irony in store: it was to Apiro that the comune was annexed when it changed its name, and it regained its independence only in 1949.
Above the door of the church of San Giovanni is the coat of arms of the basilica of Saint John Lateran, the cathedral of Rome: a grand emblem for a village church. The rest is footpaths, and two of them have names that are worth the walk on their own: the path of the Ginocchielli di San Romualdo and the one through the Valley of the Water Mills.
