Read more →Macerata is the only province in the Marche that borders three others of its own region, and since 2009 the largest of the five by area — also the thinnest on people, its 55 municipalities scattered across wide hill country. The capital sits on a ridge between the Potenza and the Chienti, two rivers that rise inside the province and run down to the Adriatic. Recanati is where Giacomo Leopardi was born, and the Colle dell'Infinito still looks out over the countryside behind his most famous poem. The university in Macerata dates to 1260, and Camerino has one nearly as old.
