The hill of the Infinite exists, and it is here: Giacomo Leopardi was born in Recanati in 1798, and the town is a secular pilgrimage between Casa Leopardi — its twenty-thousand-volume family library open to visitors — the little square of his "Saturday of the village" and the hillside garden where "shipwreck is sweet to me in this sea".
Recanati's other voice is tenor Beniamino Gigli, born 1890, remembered in the civic museum. Villa Colloredo Mels keeps the works of Lorenzo Lotto, Annunciation first. A pink-brick town along a ridge, the Marche unrolling on every side.
