The year 1862 brought a permanent name change to this Marche municipality, which until then had been known as Monte Santo. The adoption of the title Potenza Picena followed the unification of Italy, permanently altering the town's official geographic identity.
Currently home to roughly 15,800 residents in the Macerata province, the settlement takes its modern designation from the nearby watercourse. The Potenza river flows just outside the town, serving as a primary physical landmark for the area.
