Feast of Saints Vitus and Modestus
📅 Every year, on 15 June
On 15 June Mombaroccio, a municipality of 2,134 inhabitants in the province of Pesaro and Urbino, celebrates its patrons Saint Vitus and Saint Modestus.
The coat of arms, granted in 2000, lines up six hills: five are the castles whose union made Mombaroccio, and of the sixth nothing more is known. Beside them is a biroccio, the farm cart of the Marche: the village stood on the border between the Foglia and the Metauro valleys, and its workshops repaired the carts that went through. The lilies belong to the Del Monte, lords here from 1543.
In 1944 the convent of Beato Sante was hiding three hundred civilians, among them the family of Alfredo Sarano, secretary of the Jewish community of Milan, who had kept from the Germans the lists of more than fourteen thousand Jews. The German commander knew and did not report them; after thirty-six hours of Allied shelling on the Gothic Line, the three hundred came out alive from under the rubble.
