Pesaro and Urbino PU

Region: Marche · 53 towns · Population: 362,583

Two capitals share this province, which is unusual in Italy: the plates have read PU only since 1999, when Urbino won equal billing with Pesaro. Its 53 municipalities cover most of what used to be the Duchy of Urbino, reaching from the Adriatic to the borders of San Marino, Emilia-Romagna, Umbria and Tuscany. Hills fill nearly all of it, which is why the area calls itself the riviera of hills.

Urbino is the reason most people come: the Palazzo Ducale, home to the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche, makes the Italian Renaissance legible inside one building. Pesaro has its ceramics museum and the Biblioteca Oliveriana, and just outside town lies the Lucus Pisaurensis, the sacred grove of Roman Pisaurum. Fano and Gradara round out the trip, between beaches and hill country.
