Feast of Saint Martin of Tours
📅 Every year, on 11 November
On 11 November Petriano celebrates its patron Saint Martin of Tours, to whom a church in the municipal territory is dedicated.
Petriano means above three rivers: the name comes from the Latin prae tres amnes, and the three watercourses are all still there. The Apsa comes down from Urbino, the Tagliatesta arrives from the Cesane by way of Palazzo del Piano, and the Razzo marks the northern edge of the territory. The arms too speak of water and of land: on one side, on a red field, a golden fountain with two round basins held up on piers; on the other, on a blue field, an ear of wheat. The first document that carries the village's name is a parchment of the blessed Mainardo, bishop, dated 21 January 1069: it confirms to the Chapter of Urbino cathedral the ownership of various lands and churches, and among them is San Martino di Petriano. Then the castle passed to the consuls of Urbino and followed for centuries the fortunes of the city of the Montefeltro.
In 1422 Bonaiuto Ranuzzi founded a hospital here, and it was not only for the people of Petriano: it served the travellers who passed this way as well. The community was governed by the Massari, elected from time to time among the old families of the place. Among the men of the village they remember captain Carletto, known as d'Urbino, who in 1505 drove back the armies of the Borgia and then pushed on as far as Rimini, taking the city. The trade that still marks out Petriano is wrought iron work, which here runs from window grilles all the way to statues; and in the hamlet of Gallo, which is the most populous, are the comune's schools.
