Feast of Saint Christopher
📅 Every year, on 25 July
On 25 July Isola del Piano, a municipality of 635 inhabitants in the province of Pesaro e Urbino, celebrates its patron Saint Christopher (San Cristoforo).
Isola del Piano lies on the hills of the Cesane, on the left bank of the Metauro. In 1284 the village, which sided with the Ghibellines, was burnt by the men of Rimini, who were Guelphs; later it entered the duchy of Urbino, and in the sixteenth century it passed to the Castiglioni of Mantua. In the church of the Annunziata there are Renaissance frescoes painted in part by Giovanni Santi, the father of Raphael.
But in Italy the name of Isola del Piano is tied above all to one person: Gino Girolomoni was born here, a forerunner of organic farming at a time when hardly anyone knew the word. Around his idea grew the crops and the pasta works that still give the village its work, along with the rearing of Marchigiana cattle, the oil and the sour-cherry wine. Girolomoni also took up the cause of the monastery of Montebello, built in 1380 by the blessed Pietro Gambacorta of Pisa for his hermits, and devoted one of his writings to it: today it houses the museum of country life.
